Giving indigenous people a platform to express their creativity, Nepal International Indigenous Film Festival (NIIFF) 2011 is scheduled to start from April 22 at City Hall and Nepal Tourism Board simultaneously.

The festival, in its fifth year, will screen 42 films from 20 countries in the span of four days. Eight films have been made by Nepali filmmakers – two fiction, and six documentaries representing the Magar, Gurung, Rai and Newar communities.

Talking about the festival, Nabin Subba, chairperson of Indigenous Film Archive (IFA) said, “It was not easy but the journey has been worthwhile. I believe we have made several significant achievements. The screenings of films made in indigenous people and their issues have helped raise movement of indigenous people in Nepal.” Subba also credited the festival for creating a platform for filmmakers to showcase their work.

‘Evolving indigenous woman’ is the theme of the festival this year and the organizers hope to address issues concerning women. Social Architect and Director of the festival, Renchin Yonzon shared, “Through the films we will be highlighting indigenous women’s issues. They won’t be portrayed as victims like in mainstream Nepali films; we want to show the world these unsung heroes, women of valor.”

The jury this year constitutes of Suvi West, festival director of Skabmagovat film festival; Jason Ryle, festival director of imagineNATIVE film festival; and renowned Nepali filmmaker Tshering Rhitar Sherpa.

The best three films in the competitive category will be awarded golden, silver and bronze drums. While a cash prize of Rs 25,000 will be handed to the best Nepali film.
